One of the Bronx native’s most memorable quotes, Ralph Lauren build upon the definition of American fashion for the past 50 years.

In 1967 Ralph was working for the tie manufacturer Beau Brummell, named after the infamous Regency England dandy and arbiter of men’s fashion. Brummell was known for understated but well-fitted clothes, rejecting the ornate style of the era. (Although it was said he took five hours a day to dress and insisted his boots be polished with champagne.) Ralph convinced the company to let him start his own tie line, which he named Polo. The ties were wide and handmade from flamboyant colored fabric. He worked out of a single drawer in a showroom in the Empire State Building and made deliveries to stores himself. In his first year, he sold $500,000 worth of ties to retailers like Paul Stuart, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdale’s. (Lauren later had to obtain the rights to the name “Polo” from Brooks Brothers.)

He started out with the simple creation of wide ties, and has now grown into a brand that not only was inspired the designers of the world but also crafted pieces out of the world’s own aspirations.

The 50th-anniversary show took place at the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, a “graceful arched circular promenade at the heart of the park” (Friedman, 2018).

The venue gave a spectacularly luxurious environment, providing “plush carpet, velvet seats, and time-worn frescos” that matched the world of Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Ralph Lauren’s inspiration (Needleman, 2018).

He included a soundtrack that reflected his roots with a remix of Paul Simon’s “New York Is My Home” and Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me”. The show featured several collections that were mixed and matched with either other, including sportswear and a sort of Wild West theme.
