“I don’t design clothes; I design dreams.”

One of the Bronx native’s most memorable quotes, Ralph Lauren build upon the definition of American fashion for the past 50 years.

He started out with the simple creation of wide ties, and has now grown into a brand that not only was inspired the designers of the world but also crafted pieces out of the world’s own aspirations.

The 50th-anniversary show took place at the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, a “graceful arched circular promenade at the heart of the park” (Friedman, 2018).

The show invited around 500 guests, a mix that included Oprah Winfrey, Robert De Niro, Hillary Clinton, Chance the Rapper, Kanye, and a large collection of A-list designers, such as Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger

The venue gave a spectacularly luxurious environment, providing “plush carpet, velvet seats, and time-worn frescos” that matched the world of Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Ralph Lauren’s inspiration (Needleman, 2018).

He included a soundtrack that reflected his roots with a remix of Paul Simon’s “New York Is My Home” and Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs to Me”. The show featured several collections that were mixed and matched with either other, including sportswear and a sort of Wild West theme.
